From graduate to registered valuer: Charting success across the South Island

Tell us a bit about yourself… which QV office are you based in?

I’m Jonty Naylor, a registered valuer for QV. I grew up in Oamaru, where I completed my schooling before heading to Lincoln University to study a Bachelor of Land and Property Management, majoring in Primary Production. During university holidays—and for a year after graduating—I worked back home in Oamaru across the rural, property, and food sectors for a large company. I began my career at QV as a Graduate Valuer in 2022 and have been based in the Christchurch office for the past 3.5 years. Although I'm based in Christchurch, I work across various locations in the South Island, including Oamaru.

What’s your role at QV?

I began my career at QV as a Graduate Valuer in 2022 and have been based in the Christchurch office for the past 3.5 years. Although I'm based in Christchurch, I work across various locations in the South Island, including Oamaru.

You’ve become a Registered Valuer - how does it feel to have achieved this milestone?

I was fortunate to find out I had obtained my registration on my birthday—which was an unforgettable moment. It feels amazing to have reached this milestone, especially as it’s something I’ve been working toward since I started university eight years ago.

What exactly does your job entail?

I work on property rating revaluations within the South Island for lifestyle and rural properties across a wide range of areas.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

I really enjoy getting out into the field to inspect properties, gather on-the-ground insights, and explore a wide variety of locations across the country. It’s a rewarding way to combine hands-on work with learning about the dynamics of local property markets. I also take a keen interest in identifying and utilising new technologies that can enhance the way we work at QV—whether through improving efficiency, data accuracy, or the overall quality of our outputs.

At QV, we’re big proponents of work-life balance… what do you like to do in your time off?

In my downtime, I love biking across the country side and getting outdoors. I'm also a big sports fan, both playing and watching whenever I get the chance.

What advice would you offer young people looking to get into the biz? Is property valuation a good career choice?

I’m a big believer in giving everything a go—you never know what you’ll learn or what doors might open. Valuation is a rewarding career that offers variety, the chance to work with a wide range of people, and the opportunity to get out and explore different types of property and landscapes.
