About Avondale, Auckland

Suburb History and Description

Avondale is a western suburb of Auckland. It is about 12 kilometres from central Auckland and is adjacent to Waitakere. Avondale is most likely named after a village in Ireland, though it was originally called Te Whau, the name of a native tree to the area. Avondale was first settled by John Sheddon Adam in 1843, though settlement did not largely begin until the late 1850s with the introduction of Great North Road. Brickyards, tanneries, mills and market gardens were general trades of the day. In 1927 Avondale became part of Auckland city after having served as a borough for years. Today Avondale is a growing community with a public library, community centre and a few nearby parks. The Avondale Racecourse is home to the Avondale Jockey Club, providing a great means of entertainment and sport for many residents. Avondale also has many shopping amenities including a range of small boutiques, mainstream stores and eateries.
