About Onehunga, Auckland

Suburb History and Description

Onehunga is a suburb of Auckland. It is located on the Manukau Harbour; about 8 kilometres south of central Auckland near the volcanic cone of One Tree Hill. Onehunga in Māori means ‘burial ground’, probably referring to the volcanic ash from One Tree Hill. The land of Onehunga was very popular in the time of early Māori settlement, with many disputes over ownership. European settlement began in the early 1840s and Onehunga was favourably positioned on the main route between Auckland and the South, establishing the town as an early settlement district. By 1874 Onehunga had 2,044 residents. Around the 1950s-1960s, Onehunga was seen a poorer area of Auckland. Gentrification has eventually led to the area’s development and nowadays Onehunga is a bustling place to live. Onehunga is known for its shopping with over 1000 commercial and industrial businesses in the area. This includes the discount shopping mall Dressmart, which contains a wealth of mainstream outlet stores.
