About Auckland

TA History and Description

Auckland Council covers the entire Auckland region in the upper North Island from the North Shore, out west to Waitakere and down south to just before the mouth of the Waikato river. It formed from the amalgamation of the seven former district and city councils throughout the Auckland region. Auckland, named Tāmaki Makau Rau by Māori people, was first settled by the natives around 1350. They used the area for horticulture as well as for its strategic position between the two harbours. In 1832 a European bought land in Auckland, with trade initially important. Auckland was declared New Zealand’s capital in 1841, leading to much growth, although Wellington was later named the capital in 1865. The area comprises a variety of different residential, rural, commercial and industrial areas. Being the most populous city in New Zealand, Auckland has the largest economy of any region in New Zealand. Commercial ventures form a strong part of this economy, with retail and the ports featuring prominently in the CBD and some of the outlying areas contain orchards and viticulture industries as well. Covering such a vast area, Auckland is diverse in its offerings – from built up urban areas offering an abundance of shopping and cafes to beautiful coastal areas and regional parks. With beaches and the harbour accessible to all, Auckland is renowned for its sailing and water sport opportunities.
