About Hauraki District

TA History and Description

The Hauraki District is located in the Waikato region of the North Island. It covers the area south of the Coromandel Peninsula, west of the Pacific Ocean, bordering the firth of Thames and the Hauraki Gulf to the west. The Hauraki District was initially settled around the time of the 1860s gold rush in Waihi. Miners camped in the Paeroa area, converting the area into a town close to 1870. The area surrounding Paeroa got settled in the early 1900s, after a series of canals and stop banks was designed to drain the land. This created rich farmlands which were perfect for dairy farming. The Hauraki District offers a range of beautiful outdoor locations, including the Karangahake Gorge, the Hauraki Plains and appealing farmland throughout the area. Much of the land is still used for dairy farming, an important industry to the area, while local arts and crafts as well as wineries are also growing in popularity. The council provides a great range of community services, including excellent sports facilities, swimming pools, community halls, parks and reserves, and a small area consisting of natural coastline on the Pacific Ocean and the Hauraki Gulf.
