About Waikato District

TA History and Description

The Waikato District is located in the North Island. It covers the area of the northern Waikato Plains, including the Hakarimata Range. To the north of the district lies the floodplan of the Waikato River and several small lakes. Before European settlement, the Waikato District area was heavily populated by Māori natives. When Europeans started settling the area following the Treaty of Waitangi, disputes over landownership led to the Land Wars of the 1860s. After the wars were resolved the area was settled more widely by Europeans, who used the fertile land for farming. The Waikato District boasts a semi-rural community with the main industries of dairy farming, forestry and coal mining boosting the local economy. Residents enjoy a relaxed, peaceful lifestyle with beautiful views of the surrounding land making lifestyle living increasingly popular throughout the district. The council provides a wealth of community services, while the main towns of Huntly, Raglan and Te Kauwhata function as service towns for the local farmers and local residents.
