About Waipa District

TA History and Description

The Waipa District is located inland in the Bay of Plenty District of the North Island. The district is bordered by Hamilton City, the Otorohanga District, the Waikato District and the South Waikato District. The Waipa area was well sought after by Māori and European settlers because of the natural wealth of the area as well as its location near the Waikato River. European settlement largely began around the 1860s with residential areas around Cambridge growing steadily ever since. The Waipa District contains rural, commercial and residential properties, and maintains a strong sense of community. The towns Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Pirongia and Kihikihi function as service towns for the nearby farmland and provide entertainment, luxury, day-to-day and business shops and services. The council provides a wealth of amenities, including parks and reserves throughout the area. Lake Karapiro provides great swimming, boating, fishing and other water sports opportunities.
